La Pavoni cleaning routine: daily and weekly

Short answer

Wipe the steam wand after every use, clean the portafilter, basket and shower screen regularly with warm water and a mild detergent, and leave the lever down when you finish. La Pavoni says not to backflush a lever with a blind filter.

All instructions here are from La Pavoni’s current manual for the Europiccola, Professional and Stradivari.

After every use

  • Steam wand. Clean it thoroughly with a damp cloth after every use.
  • Lever down. Leave the lever in the down position when you finish, so water left in the boiler does not leak from the group, then switch off.

Regularly

  • Portafilter, basket and shower screen. Clean with warm water and a neutral detergent to prevent scale and remove coffee deposits.
  • Outside. A soft, damp cloth only. No alcohol, solvents, abrasives or detergents on the treated surfaces.

What not to do

  • No blind-filter backflushing. La Pavoni’s manual warns not to use the blind filter to clean the group head. This is different from pump machines such as the Botticelli; see the Botticelli cleaning guide.
  • Never open the cap under pressure. Switch off and release the steam first.
